Call Barring on Google Pixel: Where the Setting Is, Why It's Missing, and the Password (2026)
NoDial Editorial / 2026-10-18On a Google Pixel, call barring lives in the Phone app, under Settings → Calling accounts → your SIM → Call barring. Many Pixel owners never find it, and that is not their fault: Android hides the Call barring entry unless the mobile carrier switches it on, and on some carriers it also refuses to open until mobile data is on. This guide covers the exact path in the current Pixel Phone app, what each option on the screen does, the 4-digit password, why the entry is missing or greyed out, what the "make sure mobile data is turned on" message means, the error messages you may see, and what else a Pixel offers if you want to stop outgoing calls.
Current as of October 2026, based on the Google Phone app on Android 16, Android's open-source telephony code (AOSP), and our own checks on a Google Pixel 8a. Menu wording can change with Phone app updates, and whether call barring is offered at all is decided by your carrier.
1. The short answer
Call barring is a carrier service, defined in the GSM standard, that refuses whole categories of calls: all outgoing calls, outgoing international calls, all incoming calls, and so on. A Pixel does not block the calls itself. When you flip a switch, the Phone app sends a request to your carrier, and the carrier's network does the blocking. That is why everything about call barring on a Pixel depends on the carrier: whether the menu appears, whether it needs mobile data, and what the password is.
Pixel path: Phone → ☰ (Sidebar) → Settings → Calling accounts → your SIM → Call barring. No entry there usually means your carrier has not enabled it. A 4-digit password from your carrier is required, and call barring cannot block one specific number.
If you are new to call barring in general (what it is, the codes, how the network handles it), start with What Is Call Barring? Meaning, Settings, Codes and Password on Android. This article is about the Pixel specifically.
2. Where call barring is on a Pixel
Call barring is not in the main Settings app on a Pixel. It sits in the Google Phone app, on the settings page for each SIM.
- Open the Phone app.
- Tap the ☰ icon at the left end of the search bar. Google's carrier partners call it the Sidebar; older versions of the Phone app had a three-dot menu (⋮) at the top right instead. The sidebar contains Contacts, Settings, Clear call history, and Help & feedback.
- Tap Settings → Calling accounts.
- Tap the SIM you want to change. If you have a physical SIM and an eSIM, each has its own page, and barring is set separately for each.
- Tap Call barring. It is on the same page as Call forwarding, Fixed Dialing Numbers and the other call settings for that SIM.
On the Pixel 8a we use for testing, the Call barring entry appeared on this page, and opening it required mobile data to be on for that SIM (section 6 explains why). The path does not depend on the Pixel model: it comes from the Phone app and Android, so a Pixel 6 or a Pixel 10 on a current Phone app follows the same steps.
If there is no Call barring item on the SIM's page, jump to section 5. If the item is there but greyed out, check airplane mode first.
3. What each option on the Pixel Call barring screen does
The Pixel uses Android's standard call barring screen. The labels below are the English labels in Android's source code. Your Phone app may word them slightly differently, but the order and meaning are the same. Each option has a standard code, which is what the Phone app sends to your carrier.
| Option on the screen | What it blocks | Code |
|---|---|---|
| All outgoing | Every call you make, except emergency calls | 33 |
| Outgoing international | Calls you make to numbers in other countries | 331 |
| Outgoing international roaming | Despite the name, international calls except to your home country. Abroad, you can still call numbers in the country you are in and call home | 332 |
| All incoming | Every call to your number | 35 |
| Incoming international roaming | Incoming calls while you are roaming abroad | 351 |
| Deactivate all | Turns every barring off in one step | 330 |
| Change password | Changes the 4-digit barring password | 03 with 330 |
Two of these can be hidden by the carrier. Android has separate carrier settings for showing Change password and Deactivate all. If your screen only shows the five barring switches, your carrier has turned those two off, and you would change the password through the carrier instead.
Call barring on a Pixel applies to voice calls by default. Android's carrier setting for the barring service class defaults to voice, so barring "All outgoing" stops voice calls; it is not a switch for video calls in third-party apps such as WhatsApp or Meet, which do not go through the carrier's call service at all.
The codes also work typed into the dialer: *33*password# turns on barring of all outgoing calls, #33*password# turns it off, *#33# checks it. Whether your carrier accepts them from the phone is up to the carrier. The full list and how codes are built: Call Barring Codes: Full List, Password, and How to Reset It.
4. Turning call barring on and off, and the password
To turn a barring on:
- Open the Call barring page (section 2) and wait for "Reading settings…" to finish. The Phone app asks the carrier for the current state before it shows the switches.
- Tap the option, for example All outgoing.
- Enter the call barring password when asked. It must be 4 digits; the Pixel shows "Enter a password with 4 numbers" if you type anything else.
- Confirm. Android asks, for example, "Block all outgoing calls?" Tap OK and the Phone app shows "Updating settings…" while the carrier processes it.
To turn it off, tap the same option again and enter the same password, or use Deactivate all if your screen has it. Android confirms with "Call barring deactivated".
The password is your carrier's, not Google's
The call barring password is a 4-digit code held by your carrier's network, one per line, covering every type of barring. It is not your screen lock, your SIM PIN, or your Google account password, and Google does not set a default. Some carriers publish theirs: Vodafone UK's device guides give 1919, Vi in India says it is usually 0000, and Vodafone Australia gives 0000 or 1234. If you do not know yours, ask your carrier rather than guessing.
The GSM standard lets the network lock all password-related requests after more than three wrong entries in a row, until your carrier unlocks them. If the first two guesses fail, call your carrier.
To change the password, use Change password on the Call barring page (old password, new password, confirm), or the code **03*330*old*new*new#. If the carrier rejects the change, the old password stays in force.
5. Why Call barring is missing or greyed out on your Pixel
This is the most common Pixel complaint about call barring, and the answer is mostly not on your phone.
- Your carrier has not enabled the entry. In Android's carrier settings, the "Call barring" item is hidden by default. The Phone app removes it from the SIM's page unless the carrier's configuration turns it on. Pixel phones use Google's own per-carrier configuration, so the same Pixel can show Call barring on one SIM and not on another. A missing entry is the normal state on many carriers.
- Your carrier does not offer call barring to customers. Some carriers manage restrictions through your account instead. In the US, we could not find official T-Mobile or AT&T pages describing call barring from the phone; Verizon offers call and text blocking through Verizon Family; Google Fi's blocking features cover incoming calls and texts. In the UK, EE and Vodafone describe call barring from the phone's call settings, while O2 adds bars through My O2 or its support team.
- Airplane mode is on. Android greys out the Call barring entry in airplane mode.
- You are on the wrong SIM's page. With a physical SIM and an eSIM, each SIM has its own Calling accounts page and its own carrier settings.
If the entry is missing, the codes in section 3 sometimes still work, because the menu and the codes are separate paths to the carrier. If the carrier does not support barring at all, the codes fail too, usually with "Connection problem or invalid MMI code."
6. "To use Call barring, make sure mobile data is turned on"
This warning appears when your carrier's configuration requires mobile data on that SIM to read or change call barring. Some carriers handle call settings by sending them to a server at the carrier over the data connection, and Android lets each carrier decide whether that needs mobile data to be on. The requirements vary by carrier; using 4G/5G calling (VoLTE) does not by itself mean that mobile data must be switched on. When the carrier's configuration requires it, the Pixel blocks the Call barring page and shows:
- "To use Call barring, make sure mobile data is turned on. You can change this in mobile network settings."
- Abroad: "…make sure mobile data and data roaming are turned on."
- With two SIMs: "…make sure mobile data is turned on for SIM 1 (or SIM 2)."
If this warning appears, follow the on-screen instructions: turn on mobile data for that SIM (and data roaming if it asks for it), open Call barring, make the change, and then switch data off again if you want. While the warning is showing, Wi-Fi does not stand in for it; it asks for that SIM's mobile data. On our Pixel 8a, the Call barring page would not open until mobile data was on for that SIM.
Turning on data roaming abroad can cost money depending on your plan. Check your carrier's roaming rates first, or make the change before you travel.
7. Error messages on a Pixel and what they mean
These are the messages in Android's standard call settings code, which the Pixel Phone app uses. The title of the error box is "Call settings error".
| Message | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Network or SIM card error. | The carrier refused or failed the request. Often the service is not provisioned on your line. | Check signal and mobile data, then ask your carrier whether barring is available on your plan. |
| Unexpected response from network. | The carrier replied in a way the phone did not expect. | Try again later; if it repeats, ask the carrier. |
| Your Phone app's Fixed Dialing Numbers setting is turned on… | FDN is on and blocks the request. | Turn FDN off (section 8), change barring, then turn FDN back on. |
| Turn on the radio before viewing these settings. | The SIM's radio is off, for example in airplane mode. | Turn airplane mode off. |
| Incorrect password. | The barring password is wrong. | Stop guessing after two tries and ask the carrier. |
| Connection problem or invalid MMI code. | A code typed in the dialer was not accepted: a typo, the carrier not supporting it, or no connection. | Check the code, then try the menu, or ask the carrier. |

8. Other ways to stop outgoing calls on a Pixel
Call barring blocks calls by category. If that is not what you need, here is what else a Pixel offers.
Blocked numbers: incoming only
Phone → ☰ → Settings → Blocked numbers is the Pixel's built-in block list. Google's Phone app help describes it as declining calls from those numbers, and Android's block list discards calls and messages from them. It does nothing to calls you make: you can still dial a blocked number. To screen incoming calls more broadly, see How to Block a Number on Android.
Fixed Dialing Numbers (FDN): allow-list only
Phone → ☰ → Settings → Calling accounts → your SIM → Fixed Dialing Numbers. With FDN on, the SIM can only call the numbers on its FDN list, plus emergency numbers. Incoming calls are not affected. It needs your SIM's PIN2 from your carrier (EE, for example, gives 0000 as its default), and wrong PIN2 entries can lock the SIM. Full guide: Fixed Dialing Numbers on Android.
Family Link: for a child's Pixel
If the Pixel belongs to a child, Google Family Link can limit who they call. In Family Link, choose the child, then Controls → Contacts, calls & text → Allowed calls & texts, and pick "Anyone", "Contacts I add & limited groups" or "Only contacts I add". According to Google, this works on phones with Android 14 or later for children whose Google Account is supervised by a parent, applies to Google's Phone app (regular calls only) and Messages, does not cover other apps such as WhatsApp, and never blocks emergency services.
NoDial: block calls to the numbers you choose
None of the built-in tools can stop calls to one particular number while leaving the rest of the phone alone. NoDial does that: you add the numbers you want to stop calling, and each one is blocked always, on set days and times, or after a set number of calls. It runs on the phone, so it works whatever your carrier supports and needs no barring password. Emergency numbers cannot be added. More on the approach: How to Block Outgoing Calls on Android.
9. Side-by-side comparison
| Call barring | Fixed Dialing Numbers | Family Link | NoDial | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it stops | Whole categories (all outgoing, international…) | Everything not on the list | Calls to people not on the allowed list | Calls to the numbers you choose |
| One specific number | No | No (allow-list) | No (allow-list) | Yes |
| Needs | Carrier support, 4-digit password | PIN2 from carrier | Supervised child account, Android 14+ | The app |
| Schedules or limits | No | No | No | Yes |
| Emergency calls | Allowed | Allowed | Allowed | Allowed |
10. FAQ
- Where is call barring on a Google Pixel?
- In the Phone app: tap ☰ (Sidebar) → Settings → Calling accounts → your SIM → Call barring. On older versions of the Phone app, the menu is the three dots (⋮) at the top right instead of ☰.
- Why is there no call barring option on my Pixel?
- Android hides the Call barring entry unless your carrier enables it, and many carriers do not. It is also greyed out in airplane mode. Check that you opened the right SIM's page, then ask your carrier whether call barring is available on your line.
- What is the call barring password on a Pixel?
- It is a 4-digit password set by your carrier, not by Google. Published defaults include 1919 (Vodafone UK) and 0000 (Vi, India). The network can lock password requests after more than three wrong tries, so ask your carrier instead of guessing.
- Why does my Pixel say to turn on mobile data to use call barring?
- Because your carrier's configuration requires mobile data on that SIM to read or change call barring. Not every carrier requires it. If the warning appears, turn on mobile data for that SIM (and data roaming if it asks), make the change, then turn data off again if you like.
- How do I block outgoing calls on a Pixel?
- For all outgoing calls, use Call barring → All outgoing (if your carrier offers it). To allow only certain numbers, use Fixed Dialing Numbers. For a child's phone, use Family Link's Allowed calls & texts. To block calls to specific numbers only, use an app such as NoDial.
- Does Pixel's Blocked numbers stop me calling a number?
- No. Blocked numbers declines incoming calls and messages from those numbers. You can still call them.
- Do the *33* codes work on a Pixel?
- Android on a Pixel recognises the standard barring codes (*33*password#, #33*password#, *#33#) and sends them to the carrier. Whether they work depends on the carrier accepting them.
11. Summary
